FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Does everyone need therapy?

I do believe everyone could benefit from the therapy process. I believe that part of what it means to be human is to experience pain and suffering.  I also believe that as humans we naturally find ways to numb that pain. Therapy helps us to slow down, lean into the pain, and allow it to change us. Brene Brown's research shows that if we numb our pain we also numb our joy. I truly believe we were meant to fully experience both our pain and our joy–and I believe therapy helps us undo the stories that keep us from that.

What do sessions look like?

Typically, sessions are 45-50 minutes. In the beginning it will be
a lot of getting to know each other and understanding your goals. Starting therapy can be scary and overwhelming (trust me, I've been there) so my main focus will be to help you feel safe and relaxed in the room. I always recommend the first 4 sessions are weekly just so we can get comfortable with each other, then we can decide what works from there. Treatment length will depend on your commitment/openness to the process and the goals you have for therapy. We will talk all of that through in your first session. :)

How will I know what to talk about for 50 minutes?

Many people feel anxiety around this and just not knowing what to say in general but when people leave they typically feel like time went fast and wish they had more. You should have some idea of what you want to work on/talk about when you come in but I will also help guide you through the process and have an idea of where we are headed based on your goals. There may be times where there is silence that feels awkward or uncomfortable but we will just feel that together because it turns out silence can be very beneficial.

How quickly will I notice results?

This is different for every client depending on the goals you come in with as well as how committed you are to the process. I don't believe that 50 minutes every week is enough to heal deep wounds so what you learn in session will have to translate into practice outside of session. I also think it's important to know that sometimes in this work you will feel worse before you feel better. If you are someone who has never looked your wounds in the face before or tends to "stuff" emotions down and ignore them, sitting with them and being honest about them for 50 minutes will stir some things up (hang in there, it does get better). My work is focused on finding healing/understanding around who you are not simply changing your behavior. If you are looking for a quick fix, I might not be the right therapist for you.
